NYSC SHOULD BE REDUCED FROM ONE YEAR TO THREE MONTHS….

The National Youth Service Corp was
established with a
sole aim of furthering National unity among
Nigerians,
graduates of Universities and polytechnics
are deployed
to a different region other than their places
of origin for
a period of one year. The question we need
to ask
ourselves is: Has the NYSC had a significant
impact in
furthering our National unity?
I do not recommend the scrapping of the
program, what I
do propose is a reform in its core values. it
is no longer
news that prospective corps members jostle
for posting
to their desired states , some of them
successful, others
unlucky depending on who you know at the
top or how
‘loaded’ you are to grease palms . Cities like
Lagos,
Abuja, and Portharcourt are the most sort-
after by corp
members. Although the NYSC decree
stipulates that
every prospective corp members be
deployed to a
geopolitical zone or states different from
theirs except
on marital or health grounds , one still finds
corp
members who hailed from a particular zone
or state still
being deployed to same for their service year
, I cannot
remember the last time I met a core
Northerner
particularly of the Hausa-Fulani extraction
serving in
Lagos despite my proximity to their
orientation camp in
Iyana-Ipaja , aren’t they suppose to form
the bulk of
corp members deployed to the Southern
region ? Same
with their Southern counterparts, although
there are
considerable numbers of southerners
deployed to the
North but that is against their wish, It is no
longer a
good news to a lot of fresh graduates when
they
received the news of their posting to a
Northern state
not even states that were not affected in the
restiveness
created by insurgency.
May be the NYSC is diligent in the standard
of its
deployment policy or maybe not, that
question is left to
be answered some other time. However, the
subject of
discourse is how the incoming government
could create
massive employment opportunities through
the NYSC
program. Available records indicate that the
federal
government makes provision for 250,000
corp members
annually even though this figure far
outnumbers the
actual number of deployed graduates
annually , I do
hope the unspent money is properly
remitted. Each corp
member is paid a monthly allowance of
#19,800 for the
twelve months period of the service year and
this is my
proposition: the twelve months long service
year should
be reduced to three weeks, yes! Three
weeks, which
should begin and end at the Nationwide
orientation
camps, the posting arrangement should
however remain
unaltered, at the orientation camps, corp
members
should go through intensive
entrepreneurship programs
facilitated by industry experts, academics
and successful
business owners across the country, during
the three
weeks camping , they each corp members
should be
guided to draft a scalable business model
depending on
their discipline, interest or acquired skills, at
the end of
the orientation camp, they should be
presented with a
cheque of about #500,000 as seed
investment capital to
fund their businesses . The fund is an
aggregated sum of
their monthly allowance if spread over the
twelve
months period of the program with some
state’s
government allowance for corp members.
And as part of
the campaign promises of the APC, to
provide a one
year post-NYSC allowance for corp
members, the sum
should be made a one-off payment for each
of the corp
members to help catapult their startups .
they must be
allowed to choose a perfect and suitable
location to set
up their businesses . The NYSC directorate
should
provide mentorship and close monitoring for
each of the
financed corp members for a period of one
year, those
whose businesses flourish or break-even
within the
period should be recommended for soft
loans under any
of the federal government MSMEs programs.
Those who
gain government employment , travel abroad
or for any
other reason could not execute their
businesses within
the period should be made to repay the
grant.
I want to believe I have tabled a positive
proposition
before the incoming government, I advise
erudite
scholars and the general public to criticize ,
analyze and
amend where necessary.
